Livestreamer's murder in Mexico raises cartel link questions

The murder of content creator César Gastélum in Mexico's Sinaloa state has prompted questions about potential connections between influencers and criminal cartels.

  • César Gastélum was shot dead while livestreaming in Culiacán, Sinaloa, on Tuesday.
  • The Sinaloa state prosecutor's office is investigating Gastélum's posts, some of which refer to a criminal group.
  • At least 10 content creators have been killed in Sinaloa since a cartel war began two years ago.

Content creator César Gastélum was murdered on Tuesday while livestreaming in Culiacán, Mexico's Sinaloa state. The incident, caught on camera, shows two men on a motorbike approaching Gastélum outside a fast-food restaurant before one shoots him in the head.

The Sinaloa state prosecutor's office stated that its investigations include a number of posts Gastélum had published, with some reportedly referring to a criminal group. However, officials said Gastélum had not received threats from criminal groups nor was he under police investigation for alleged criminal links.

Gastélum's killing is the latest in a trend, with at least 10 content creators murdered in Sinaloa since a war between rival factions of the Sinaloa criminal cartel began two years ago. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday that authorities would pursue those responsible for his murder and those who ordered it.
