Banking giant Lloyds has made history by becoming England Rugby’s first ever back-of-shirt partner. This landmark multi-year agreement sees the financial institution join the Rugby Football Union's (RFU) sponsorship portfolio, with its logo set to feature above the names of senior men’s and women’s players.

The deal is reportedly valued at £5m annually. Suresh Balaji, chief marketing officer at Lloyds, expressed pride, stating, “Seeing our iconic Black Horse on the England shirt for the first time is a proud moment for all of us here at Lloyds.”

RFU chief Bill Sweeney highlighted the significance of the partnership, calling it “a truly significant partnership for the RFU and marks an important moment for rugby in England.” The funds from Lloyds are intended for investment across the entire English rugby pyramid.

Lloyds now stands alongside O2 as a prominent brand on England’s white shirts, with other sponsors in the RFU's portfolio including Defender, British Airways, Apple, and Guinness. This move by Lloyds aligns with a broader trend of traditional banking giants re-engaging in major sponsorships.

Why this matters: This partnership represents a significant new revenue stream for the RFU, with funds earmarked for investment across all levels of English rugby. It also marks a notable return of major banking brands to prominent sports sponsorships.
