London Broncos eye Super League despite IMG grading setback

London Broncos did not secure a top 14 spot in the 2026 IMG Gradings, but could still join Super League next season through a proposed expansion linked to an NRL investment deal.

  • London Broncos ranked 16th in the 2026 IMG Gradings, missing out on a top 14 Super League place.
  • Super League may expand to 15 clubs next season to accommodate London Broncos, pending an investment deal with Australia's NRL.
  • Wakefield Trinity became a Grade A club for the first time, topping the 2026 Club Grading rankings.

London Broncos failed to secure a top 14 position in the 2026 IMG Gradings, which were released on Thursday. The club, which won the Championship last season, ranked 16th, behind fellow second-tier club Barrow.

Despite this, London Broncos could still join Super League next season. The league is reportedly set to expand to 15 clubs under the terms of an impending investment deal with Australia's NRL. This expansion would be separate from the Grading process.

The proposed expansion requires confirmation from RFL officials and a vote by top-flight clubs. A unanimous vote could confirm London's promotion by early next month.

Wakefield Trinity rose to the top of the standings with a score of 17.85 out of 20, making them a Grade A club for the first time. Leeds, Warrington, and Wigan also ranked highly. Catalans Dragons and Hull FC lost their Grade A status after poor seasons.

Why this matters: The proposed NRL deal is widely expected to make the Gradings system obsolete for determining future Super League compositions.
