London Broncos, the runaway Championship winners, are reportedly set to become the 15th team in an expanded Super League next season, despite being graded 16th in the Rugby Football League's new system. This places them below Barrow Raiders, who are considered the best-performing Championship club.
The Broncos, owned by Darren Lockyer, swept the second tier in 2026, winning all three domestic trophies. Their goal was to dominate on the pitch and push for a top 14 spot in the gradings, which typically determine Super League admission based on metrics like attendances, on-field performance, and finance.
However, a partnership nearing completion between the NRL and Super League is reportedly contingent on London's presence in the top flight. The Australian governing body has insisted on this condition for its investment in the British game, leading to Super League's potential expansion from 14 to 15 teams.
Super League would need to implement plans for a 15-team competition, including introducing bye rounds and deciding how central distribution will be shared. Talks between the two leagues are accelerating, with hopes of an agreement during the upcoming World Cup in Australia.
