Get ready for a tale of grit, determination, and the unwavering passion of two mates who've embarked on an epic road trip across North America! London's finest cabbie duo, Ollie Jenks and Seth Scott, are currently navigating the 10,000-mile behemoth that is the World Cup Stadium Challenge. Their trusty steed, 'Abby the Cabby', a classic black cab with more character than a Premier League trophy cabinet, has been their faithful companion through thick and thin – or rather, mechanical breakdowns and scorching temperatures.
The spark for this extraordinary adventure was ignited by Jenks' lifelong love affair with football, coupled with his enthusiasm for the BBC documentary 'Stephen Fry in America', where the renowned comedian hitched a ride across the States in a similar vehicle. This challenge not only offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in the World Cup atmosphere but also serves as a charitable endeavour. By offering free lifts to fellow spectators from diverse nations, including Colombia, Ghana, DR Congo, and Argentina, Jenks and Scott are highlighting the financial burdens associated with attending this global extravaganza.
This isn't their first rodeo – if you will! The dynamic duo had previously conquered an incredible 14,000-mile journey in a Reliant Robin from London to Cape Town, making them the pioneers of crossing Africa in a three-wheeled vehicle. Upon hearing the World Cup host announcements, Jenks saw an opportunity to combine his football fervour with the allure of another grand expedition.
Acquiring 'Abby' wasn't without its challenges. Scott tracked down the only traditional London taxi they could find on a film set in Vancouver – it was love at first sight, albeit at £1,000 and requiring an initial £1,000 investment for repairs before embarking on their odyssey. Despite numerous mechanical issues, including overheating and smashed lights, they've consistently averaged around 350 miles per day, testament to their unyielding spirit.
The journey hasn't been without its hiccups – or rather, thorough searches by Mexican police that saw some of their equipment seized. Yet, Jenks remains steadfast in his optimism, believing that the duo's perseverance and determination will inspire others to pursue their own ambitious dreams, proving that such adventures are within anyone's grasp if they're willing to take the leap.
The World Cup venues span major cities across three host nations – including iconic stadiums like MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, AT&T Stadium in Texas, SoFi Stadium in California, BC Place in Vancouver, BMO Field in Toronto, Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. This extensive route will undoubtedly test the duo's resolve, but their spirits remain unbroken as they aim to complete this magnificent challenge by the tournament's conclusion on 19th July.
