The city is bracing itself as a third consecutive heatwave brings temperatures soaring to potentially record-breaking highs. In this critical period, the London Fire Brigade has been stretched to its limits, with a staggering 1,251 emergency incidents in just 24 hours – its busiest period so far this year.
A particularly alarming fire on High Road in Wood Green prompted an immediate response from 80 firefighters and 12 fire engines. The crews were forced to stay at the scene for a lengthy 12-hour operation, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne has sounded the alarm, warning of increased wildfire risks during this prolonged heatwave. He urged residents to take precautions, specifically advising against using disposable barbecues in public spaces due to their potential to retain heat and fuel fires.
In preparation for the long summer ahead, the LFB is having specialist vehicles on standby to combat blazes. This comes as a stark reminder that last year saw over 30 wildfires ravage the capital, including incidents in Dagenham, Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, and Walthamstow Marshes.
The Brigade has also introduced an interactive water safety map highlighting more than 1,500 water-related incidents since 2020. This initiative follows multiple fatalities in open water during recent heatwaves, including a tragic incident involving a teenage boy at Royal Victoria Dock last week. With the GCSE and A-Level exams now concluded, the LFB is calling on parents and guardians to ensure young people are aware of water safety.
Temperatures are forecasted to rise to 34C by Wednesday and Thursday, with Amber heat health alerts issued for London, the Midlands, and eastern and southern England from July 8th until July 12th. The UK's Health Security Agency has warned that while it may not reach the extreme highs seen in late June (37.7C), the prolonged heatwave poses a significant threat.
