London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced more than £58 million in new funding to enhance the energy efficiency of over 5,000 social homes across the capital. This marks London's first devolved retrofit funding, with the Mayor's home energy saving fund supporting improvements as part of the government's £15 billion Warm Homes Plan.
The funding will enable social housing providers to implement measures such as insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps. These upgrades aim to make homes more energy efficient, helping them stay warmer in winter and cooler during heatwaves.
Mr Khan stated that thousands of Londoners live in inadequate homes that are often freezing and damp in winter, and uncomfortably hot in summer. He added that the funding will transform these homes, reduce bills, and improve living conditions, while also boosting the economy through green jobs and skills.
Mete Coban, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, welcomed the investment, noting that 10% of Londoners currently experience fuel poverty. He highlighted that making homes cheaper to heat and cool, and improving indoor air quality, will lead to healthier homes and a fairer London.
