The sweltering summers that have become a hallmark of London's climate are set to continue for millions of commuters braving the Tube, as it's emerged that only four out of eleven lines offer air conditioning. The Metropolitan, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines – all part of the sub-surface network – provide a respite from the heat, leaving passengers on the remaining seven lines to endure often unbearable conditions.
The disparity in comfort levels is largely a result of the network's age and design. The older deep-level 'tube' lines, including the Victoria, Jubilee, Central, and Northern lines, feature narrow tunnels that cannot accommodate modern cooling systems without exacerbating the heat problem.
Transport for London (TfL) has acknowledged that installing air conditioning on these lines would transfer heat from inside the carriages to the surrounding tunnel environment, making them even hotter. This issue is compounded by the age of much of the infrastructure, with some sections dating back to the late 19th century.
While significant upgrades have been made over the years, retrofitting a comprehensive air conditioning solution across the entire network remains a complex and costly endeavour. In contrast, newer additions like the Elizabeth Line – which operates through central London – boast fully air-conditioned carriages, highlighting advancements in modern railway design.
The lack of air conditioning on many lines has significant implications for passengers, particularly those with health conditions or disabilities that are exacerbated by heat. For now, commuters will continue to rely on open windows and ventilation systems, a far cry from the comfort offered by fully cooled carriages on the four designated lines.
