London's Night Tube is marking ten years since its launch on 19 August 2016. The service has transported 67 million passengers over the past decade.
Initially, the Night Tube operated on the Victoria and Central lines, with over 50,000 journeys made between 00:30 and 05:30 on its opening night. The service now runs on Fridays and Saturdays, having expanded to include the Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, and Windrush lines. It currently averages more than 81,000 journeys nightly.
Plans for the Night Tube were announced in November 2013 by Transport for London (TfL) due to increasing demand for overnight travel. Its launch was delayed from September 2015 following a dispute between TfL and rail unions regarding pay and working conditions.
TfL has stated there are no current plans to introduce Night Tube services on Thursday nights or to expand to additional Underground lines. Any expansion would require extra funding and significant changes to overnight maintenance schedules, which could be considered after major TfL modernisation programmes are completed.
