Lorraine Ribbons, who has died at the age of 72, devoted a significant portion of her life to supporting children with heart conditions and their families. For many years, she served as a dedicated volunteer for the Association of Children with Heart Disorders (ACHD), an organisation committed to assisting young people affected by congenital or acquired heart conditions.
Her extensive work with the ACHD involved regular visits to young patients in hospitals, offering comfort and practical support during challenging times. Beyond the hospital environment, Ms. Ribbons was instrumental in arranging holidays for these children, providing them with opportunities for respite and enjoyment that might otherwise have been inaccessible due to their health needs.
The impetus for Ms. Ribbons' profound commitment to the ACHD stemmed from her personal experiences. Two of her three children were born with heart conditions, a circumstance that deeply impacted her and led her to seek ways to help others facing similar struggles. From the late 1970s onwards, this personal connection propelled her into a long and impactful volunteering career.
Throughout her time with the ACHD, Ms. Ribbons played a crucial role in befriending and counselling other families navigating the complexities of a child's heart condition.
