A lorry driver from Crewe has spoken of his immense relief after playing a pivotal role in rescuing a family from a serious car crash on the M1 motorway. Ken Wheatley, 60, was travelling southbound near Bedford in the early hours of 29 March when he witnessed a car speeding past and colliding with another vehicle. The impact sent the second car spinning before it ultimately landed on its side.
Mr Wheatley, a grandfather-of-four, was among several HGV drivers who immediately responded to the incident. They used their lorries to block oncoming traffic, creating a safe zone around the crash site, before rushing to assist the occupants of the overturned vehicle. He spent approximately 40 minutes at the scene, working to free a man, a woman, and their young daughter from the wreckage.
Recounting the dramatic event to BBC Radio Stoke, Mr Wheatley admitted his initial apprehension when approaching the overturned car. "I didn't know if they were going to be OK," he stated, describing the fear of discovering serious injuries. Rescuers first managed to smash the driver's side window and extract the man after hearing his calls for help. Mr Wheatley then climbed onto the vehicle and, with the assistance of another HGV driver, helped the woman and the crying young girl from the back seat.
Miraculously, none of the family members sustained any serious injuries. Mr Wheatley described the moment of seeing them safe as a "massive relief," adding that it was "really nice when we saw them all hugging each other and we knew everything was OK." He humbly added that he felt it was simply "something we should do," expressing a hope that others would show the same compassion if his own grandchildren were in a similar situation.
Mr Wheatley, who has been employed by AO since 2022, has since been recognised for his courageous actions, being named the company's employee of the month. Lynne Wood, Director of Service Delivery at AO, commended his "heroic actions" and quick thinking, noting that his swift response in blocking the motorway potentially saved the family's lives. Northamptonshire Police were reportedly contacted for comment regarding the crash.
