Luigi Mangione, who is accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, was in court in New York today. His murder trial is scheduled to commence next month, with jury selection due to start on 8 September.
A judge today could establish further ground rules for the trial and other aspects of the case. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including second-degree murder and weapons-related offences.
Earlier this summer, a judge allowed a gun and a notebook containing Mangione's purported writings to be presented as evidence by the prosecution. However, some items recovered from his Pennsylvania arrest, including a gun magazine, cell phone, passport, wallet, and computer chip, were excluded from evidence.
Prosecutors have presented surveillance footage reportedly showing the moment Thompson was shot from behind by a hooded individual. They have also used footage to trace Mangione's alleged movements after the shooting, alongside ballistics and fingerprint evidence.
Mangione's legal team has not yet revealed its full defence strategy. His lawyers previously proposed and then withdrew an "extreme emotional disturbance" argument.
