The northbound carriageway of the M1 in Leicestershire was shut down after a dramatic two-car crash on Sunday morning, leaving one person badly injured and prompting a multi-agency response. The collision happened at approximately 08:00 BST, just after junction 20.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene, with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirming that they rescued one person from a vehicle and took them to hospital for treatment. However, details about their condition remain unclear.
National Highways, which manages England's major roads, closed the M1 northbound between junction 20 (Lutterworth) and junction 21 (M69/Leicester), while diversion routes were put in place to direct traffic. Thankfully, those trapped within the closure zone were safely released by authorities.
A fleet of emergency services – including an air ambulance, police, and paramedics – converged on the scene to manage the situation and provide assistance. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they finished their operations at 09:16 BST and left the site.
