'The Book of Birds', which features text by Robert Macfarlane and artwork by Jackie Morris, has been awarded the Wainwright prize book of the year. The book is an illustrated guide to Britain's threatened bird species, focusing on 49 declining or endangered birds.
Macfarlane previously stated that the book aimed to "pull birds back into focus and splendour – and warn against their vanishing," noting a significant decline in bird populations in North America and Europe.
The children's book of the year award went to 'Otherlands: An Illustrated Journey Through Earth’s Lost Worlds' by Thomas Halliday, with illustrations by Gavin Scott.
The Wainwright prize, founded in 2013, also announced four further category winners, with overall winners receiving an additional £2,500 each on top of the £500 category prize.
