macOS 27 Golden Gate Brings Siri AI to the Mac

Apple has released macOS 27 Golden Gate, which integrates a new Siri AI with screen context and updates Spotlight Search. The update is available from today for a range of Apple Silicon Macs.

  • The new Siri can be invoked anywhere on screen to answer questions about what it sees, summarise information or provide more details.
  • Spotlight Search now allows users to ask Siri questions directly and search within Applications, Files, Actions and Clipboard.
  • macOS 27 Golden Gate is available starting today for specified MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro models.

Apple has released macOS 27 Golden Gate, an update that brings a newly updated Siri AI and design changes to the Mac. The new Siri offers the same features and capabilities as on iOS 27, but with access to different context on the desktop.

Siri can be invoked anywhere on screen, allowing it to answer questions about what it sees, summarise information or provide more details. Users can also select part of a page using Visual Intelligence features, with keyboard shortcuts to add the focused window to context or bring up a crosshair selection tool.

Spotlight Search has also been improved. Users can ask Siri questions within Spotlight to get answers from the web, and can select Applications, Files, Actions and Clipboard to search within that particular area of context. Spotlight also allows users to run Shortcuts or look up recent search history.

Since Siri has access to files, emails and messages, users can search for things they could not before. In tests, it was possible to pull up membership IDs without opening files, ask for details about an upcoming trip, and look up an embargo date for a news story in the works.

Siri can also help with reviewing documents or writing tasks. Users can select a block of text and ask Siri to proofread, improve or rewrite it, or ask Siri to draft something within any text box.

Safari has added AI-powered page tracking for monitoring things like price drops, privacy policy changes or new blog posts, and can automatically organise tabs based on topics. Other features include enhanced child safety controls, shared cross-platform photo albums, an updated eraser, better search in email, app resizing for iPhone mirroring, and quick suggestions for adding events to the calendar.

The update also brings design changes with new Liquid Glass icons, an adjustable slider for Liquid Glass design, and a better way to diffuse content when moving windows. App windows have a more consistent corner radius, sidebars stretch edge-to-edge with new colourful icons, and active windows are better highlighted.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is available starting today for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 2020 version with Apple Silicon or later, iMac with Apple Silicon (2021 or later), Mac Mini (2020 or later), Mac Studio (2022 or later), Mac Pro (2023 or later), and MacBook Neo. Users can go to System Settings > General > Software Update to get the latest version.

Why this matters: The update brings AI-powered contextual assistance and search directly into the Mac desktop, potentially changing how users interact with files, emails and applications.

What this means for you: If you own a supported Mac, you can download macOS 27 Golden Gate from today to access the new Siri and Spotlight features.
