Laura Loomer's recent trip to Kyiv has left her with a stark new perspective on Ukraine, marking a significant shift from her previously dismissive stance. The US right-wing influencer, who boasts nearly two million social media followers, now advocates for robust sanctions against Russia and expresses unwavering support for the besieged nation.
Her visit was anything but a typical tourist's experience – Loomer witnessed an air raid during her stay in Kyiv and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the presidential palace. The private meeting, captured in a photograph posted online, has sparked considerable attention, particularly given its candid nature: 'no questions off limits', as Loomer herself described it.
The meeting also reignited speculation about US-Ukraine relations, with President Zelenskyy hinting at an upcoming visit to Washington. Notably, this would coincide with the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham and has fuelled suggestions that the Trump administration's stance on Ukraine may be undergoing a significant transformation.
Loomer's newfound conviction aligns with a more aggressive approach towards Russia, echoing Ukrainian officials' long-standing demands for an economic backlash against Moscow. In her post-trip interview, she unequivocally stated that 'the United States needs to break Russia’s economy until they submit to peace', further linking the Kremlin to its allies in Tehran and criticising Putin's portrayal of Russia as a bastion of Christianity.
The visit also included a poignant stop at Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, where Loomer condemned Vladimir Putin's narrative that Russia is a pro-Christian nation – a stance undercut by the Russian drone attack on this historic site in June. The change in her rhetoric has been warmly welcomed by Ukrainian officials and observers alike.
Anton Gerashchenko, a prominent blogger and former adviser to the Ukrainian government, hailed Loomer's interview with Zelenskyy as 'important and necessary', praising it for marking a clear break from Russian narratives and propaganda within the MAGA movement. The Ukrainian president's office commended Loomer's courage in visiting Ukraine despite the risks – including air raid sirens – underscoring her commitment to witnessing the reality on the ground.
Against this backdrop, Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine, with a ballistic missile attack on Friday claiming six lives and injuring dozens in the Kyiv region. Additionally, an air bomb strike in Sloviansk resulted in five fatalities. The conflict shows no signs of abating, as Ukrainian long-range drones remain active, targeting Russian territory.
