A large wildfire burning through heathland on the Suffolk coast has been declared a major incident. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service stated that approximately 90 firefighters are working in challenging conditions to bring the "large-scale, wind-driven" fire under control, which began on Wednesday afternoon.
The fire service reported that the blaze is spreading rapidly south-west towards St James's Church, off Westleton Road. Much of the affected area is a nature reserve owned by the National Trust, which is assisting firefighters. The area is also near the RSPB Minsmere nature reserve.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles. People are also urged to keep windows and doors shut. The fire service is utilising equipment including off-road vehicles, drones, and quad bikes.
