Maldon & Tiptree FC's owners, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow and his husband Scott, have been hit with a significant escalation of charges, as the couple faces an additional 18 allegations, including rape and child sex offences. The shocking development marks a turning point in the case, which has left fans and the wider community reeling.
Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, now stands accused of a total of 14 new offences, including two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, two offences related to paying for sex with a child, five counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, and one count each of causing an individual to engage in non-consensual sexual activity and inciting the same. His husband, Scott Drewitt-Barlow, 32, has been charged with two additional counts of rape and one count of causing or inciting a person to engage in non-consensual sexual activity.
The new charges follow an initial investigation in May, during which Essex Police raided the couple's home in Danbury, as well as the football club. At that time, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow faced three counts of sexual assault on a male, four counts of raping a man aged 16 or over, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel for another person with a view to exploitation. Scott Drewitt-Barlow was initially accused of sexual assault on a male, rape of a man aged 16 or over, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel for another person with a view to exploitation.
The alleged offences are said to have occurred across the UK between 2013 and 2026. The Drewitt-Barlows gained widespread attention in 1999 when Barrie, then part of a same-sex couple, became one of Britain's first gay fathers through a surrogate mother. He has also featured in reality TV programmes such as 'Rich House, Poor House' and 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht'. Police searches in May included The Swan pub in Braintree, which is owned by Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, and a Rolls-Royce was removed from the Maldon Stadium.
Under their ownership, Maldon & Tiptree FC secured promotion to tier seven of the English football pyramid. Notable signings, including former West Ham and Ipswich striker Freddie Sears and ex-Manchester City player Kevin Horlock, who took on a management role, aimed to raise the club's profile.
The couple is scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court in September for a plea hearing, with a provisional trial date set for 18 January. They remain remanded in custody.
