Chelsea defender Malo Gusto is reportedly assessing his future at Stamford Bridge, with sources indicating the club has placed a substantial price tag of over £75 million on the 23-year-old right-back. This development follows Chelsea's agreement in principle to acquire Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a fee exceeding £43 million, a move that has intensified doubts surrounding Gusto's position within the squad.
Gusto's representatives are understood to have initiated exploratory discussions with several clubs, including Premier League champions Manchester City. However, despite City's interest in bolstering their right-back options to provide competition for Matheus Nunes, sources suggest that Gusto is not currently considered a primary target at this stage of the transfer window, potentially due to Chelsea's high valuation.
The potential departure of Gusto underscores Chelsea's pressing need to generate significant funds through player sales this summer. Following a tenth-place finish in the Premier League last season, the club missed out on European qualification, necessitating strategic financial manoeuvres. This need has already seen Spain international Marc Cucurella move to Real Madrid in a deal worth £52 million.
Chelsea's broader transfer strategy involves strengthening the squad, with at least one new centre-back targeted to join Palestra. This ambition has cast uncertainty over the futures of several other defenders, including Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Wesley Fofana. Chalobah, for instance, has attracted interest from Serie A side Como, though the potential cost of a deal is understood to be a sticking point for the Italian club.
Manchester City, meanwhile, continues its search for a natural right-back to complement Matheus Nunes, who impressed in the role last season after being converted from midfield. While City had been linked with Marco Palestra before Chelsea's intervention, and previously explored options like Tino Livramento and Pedro Porro, the club is now focused on identifying a young player who can develop into the role long-term. The high asking price for Gusto appears to be a significant hurdle in any potential move to the Etihad Stadium.
