A man in his 40s has admitted to 32 sexual offences against his girlfriend, committed over a period of more than a decade. The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, entered guilty pleas at Northampton Crown Court on Tuesday, 9 July 2026, to crimes that include rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration.
The offences took place between January 2014 and September 2025. Ten of the charges, which include four counts of rape, four counts of assault by penetration, and two sexual assaults, were committed 'together with a person unknown', the court heard. Recordings of some of the incidents were discovered on the defendant's devices.
During the proceedings, the prosecutor, Alexandra Felix KC, stated that the prosecution maintains the victim was drugged and 'stupefied' during all the offences. However, the defence barrister, Nathalie Carter, indicated that this claim is not accepted in its entirety, with the key dispute being whether the victim was asleep or had been drugged. Ms Carter noted that her client had 'made it clear to me from the beginning he didn't want to contest any matters', meaning a Newton hearing to resolve factual disputes will not be necessary.
The defendant appeared visibly emotional during his arraignment, at one point asking the judge for a moment to compose himself. Judge David Herbert KC informed the defendant that a very substantial prison term is inevitable and that he would need to consider whether a life sentence would be appropriate given the gravity and sustained nature of the abuse. Sentencing has been scheduled for 18 September 2026.
Andrew Hopkinson, District Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service East Midlands, commented on the case, highlighting the victim's courage throughout the process. He stated that the successful prosecution was a result of close collaboration with Northamptonshire Police to build a 'thorough and compelling case' that led to the defendant's guilty pleas for dozens of serious offences.
