Man admits posing as medical student at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

A 22-year-old man has admitted to fraud and theft after pretending to be a medical student at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for several weeks.

  • Stephen Simpson, 22, admitted to fraud between 9 December 2023 and 26 January 2024.
  • He wore medical scrubs and NHS branded clothing, and had a stethoscope and pager.
  • Simpson gained access to restricted areas, staff-only areas, wards, and medical files.

Stephen Simpson, 22, has admitted to pretending to be a medical student at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) for several weeks. He appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, where he pleaded guilty to fraud and theft.

Simpson, from Aberdeen, admitted that between 9 December 2023 and 26 January 2024, he induced employees to allow him to remain in the hospital. He wore medical scrubs and NHS branded clothing, and had a stethoscope and pager, gaining access to restricted areas, staff-only areas, wards, and medical files.

He also admitted stealing items of NHS branded clothing, a pager, and perfume. Sentence has been deferred until later this month for reports, including a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment.
