A poignant tribute to lives lost in conflict has been left scarred after an alleged arson attack on a memorial wall in Golders Green, North London. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of 27th April, has led to counter-terrorism police launching a probe into the suspected hate crime.
Ali Fallahi, 45, from Ilford, is accused of starting the fire at the Limes Avenue site, and has been charged with arson. He holds dual British and Iranian nationality, and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday to face charges linked to damage caused to a memorial cabinet belonging to the Miga Rally community group.
The wall itself was not damaged in the fire, which was quickly extinguished by emergency services. However, the incident has left the community reeling. The memorial serves as a tribute to thousands of people reportedly killed during a crackdown in Iran earlier this year, as well as those who lost their lives in the 2023 Hamas attack on the Nova music festival in Israel.
Commander Helen Flanagan, leader of counter-terrorism policing in London, said that the charges represent a significant development in ongoing investigations into a series of arson attacks targeting both the Jewish community and the Iranian diaspora. The Metropolitan Police have confirmed Mr Fallahi's dual nationality.
