A fatal hit-and-run collision on York Street in north Belfast has left a community reeling after the death of 24-year-old Raven Adams from County Tipperary. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of 16 July, has now led to charges against a 22-year-old man, Francis Donaldson from Cardigan Drive in Belfast.
The charges relate to the incident where Mr Donaldson allegedly drove a vehicle into Ms Adams, who tragically died at the scene. Another pedestrian was also seriously injured in the same incident, leading to an additional charge of causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving. The prosecution alleges that Mr Donaldson's actions were reckless and put multiple lives at risk.
A police officer confirmed in court that there is sufficient evidence to link Mr Donaldson to the charges. CCTV footage captured the aftermath of the incident, including the accused fleeing the scene on foot. The discovery of a white Mazda car resting against a wall on the footpath on York Street was also made following a 999 call made by an eyewitness.
During the court appearance, Mr Donaldson's solicitor read out a pre-prepared statement expressing remorse to the families affected. However, the police expressed concerns that Mr Donaldson posed a risk to himself and others, citing his stated mental health issues as a reason for opposing bail. The judge agreed with this assessment, remanding Mr Donaldson in custody until his next appearance in four weeks.
