Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca may face a significant challenge just six weeks into his new role, with midfielder Rodri heavily linked with a return to Spain. City have already turned down a £38.5m offer from Barcelona for the 30-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract, following interest from Real Madrid.
Among the leading candidates to replace the World Cup-winning captain, City have reportedly held talks with Lille's 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who is estimated to cost £85m. Bouaddi is said to be keen on the move.
Enzo Fernandez, 25, is another favoured option for Maresca, who previously worked with him at Chelsea. However, Chelsea are expected to demand £120m for the Argentine, and have set a deadline of 17:00 BST on Friday for any offers. City have also explored potential moves for Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister.
Rodri's potential departure would leave a considerable void, not only in midfield but also in leadership, especially with club captain Bernardo Silva and experienced players John Stones and Nathan Ake also having left. Maresca is believed to want a homegrown player in the leadership group, which currently includes Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland.
