A 25-year-old Queensland man has lost his life in a tragic cross-border police chase that spanned hundreds of miles through the Australian Northern Rivers region. The incident highlights the high-stakes risks faced by both police and civilians when pursuing suspects across jurisdictional boundaries.
The events unfolded on Saturday, July 19, 2026, when members of the public reported an armed man on Robina Town Centre Drive in Robina, on the Gold Coast. Queensland police quickly located a stationary white Ford utility nearby at approximately 12:40 BST and attempted to detain the driver. However, the vehicle evaded them and headed eastbound towards the Gold Coast Highway.
Queensland officers notified their New South Wales counterparts that the vehicle was heading across the border around 1:00 BST. NSW police located the utility shortly after at Banora Point, just south of Tweed Heads. Despite directions to stop, the driver failed to comply, prompting NSW police to initiate a pursuit.
Road spikes were deployed twice at South Murwillumbah in an effort to stop the vehicle, but it appears to have continued for approximately 20 kilometres before veering down an embankment. Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter and deployed negotiators, but as they approached the vehicle, they discovered the driver unconscious. Police attempted CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was subsequently seized from the vehicle.
The investigation into this incident is being led by NSW police, who will determine the full circumstances surrounding the man's death, including the actions taken by officers throughout the pursuit.
