A man has died in hospital a week after being punched outside a pub in west Belfast, prompting a police investigation into his death. Carl Holland, 30, had been in critical condition since last Friday following the incident on Suffolk Road, which left him with a serious head injury.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed Mr Holland's passing and stated their Major Investigation Team is now leading the inquiry. Detective Inspector Collins extended condolences to Mr Holland's family and friends, acknowledging the profound difficulty of this time for them.
The incident, which occurred around 9pm BST, reportedly followed a verbal altercation earlier in the evening. Police indicate that a male suspect arrived at the scene in a taxi, assaulted Mr Holland, and then departed in the same vehicle. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and has since been released on bail to allow for further police inquiries. Additionally, a 46-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm, have also been bailed.
The news has sent shockwaves through the local community. Independent west Belfast councillor Paul Doherty described the assault as a "senseless act" and urged individuals to consider the consequences of their actions. Sinn Féin MP for West Belfast, Paul Maskey, also expressed his devastation, stating that the community stands in solidarity with Mr Holland's loved ones during their period of grief.
This tragic event underscores the devastating impact of violence and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice. The police investigation is continuing, and further details may emerge as inquiries progress.
