Mario David Coronado Juarez, a Guatemalan national, was killed on Sunday in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His death occurred after his vehicle struck a tree at high speed and burst into flames, shortly after agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
Leading Democrats and immigration advocates in Michigan are demanding transparency from federal authorities regarding the incident. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered a review of the Grand Rapids incident.
Joseph Trigg, chief of the Grand Rapids police department, has asked the Michigan state police (MSP) to join the investigation. Trigg stated that his department's traffic detectives had been "limited in their ability" to obtain information from federal agencies. Hillary Scholten, a Democratic Michigan congresswoman, has also requested an explanation from ICE regarding its agents' actions.
ICE and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), have not yet commented on the incident.
