  • The attack, which occurred in November 2023, also involved assaulting a childcare worker and two other children.
  • The incident triggered significant anti-immigrant riots and looting in Dublin.
  • One child, a five-year-old girl, sustained life-altering injuries.
  • Bouchaker, an Algerian national and Irish citizen, denied all charges during the trial.

A chilling attack on a Dublin childcare centre has had far-reaching consequences for the victims and their families, as well as the wider community. Riots erupted in response to the attempted murder of three children, leaving destruction and heartbreak in its wake.

Riad Bouchaker, 52, an Algerian national with Irish citizenship, was convicted by a jury at the central criminal court on Wednesday of attempting to murder three young children, alongside additional charges of assault causing serious harm and other assaults. The attack occurred on 23rd November 2023, as the victims emerged from the creche in Parnell Square.

The evidence presented to the court revealed that Bouchaker had learned of a social welfare payment refusal earlier that morning, prompting him to collect a backpack and a 12-inch kitchen knife from his hostel. He then waited outside the childcare centre, where he carried out the horrific assault.

The most severely injured victim, a five-year-old girl, suffered a life-changing brain injury, rendering her non-verbal and wheelchair-bound, with ongoing requirements for stomach tube feeding. A five-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl also received hospital treatment for their injuries, while childcare worker Leanne Flynn was left with two collapsed lungs and severe internal injuries after attempting to protect the children.

The attack sparked widespread outrage and unrest in Dublin, with rioters targeting immigrants and vandalising property. The destruction caused during the three-week trial was described as one of the worst civil disturbances in decades.

Throughout the proceedings, Bouchaker maintained his innocence, claiming a lack of intent to kill. However, prosecutors argued that his actions demonstrated a clear intention to cause harm, citing the targeting of small children and the use of a deadly knife.

Judge Tony Hunt praised the jury for delivering verdicts consistent with the evidence presented, saying “No more needs to be said today.” Bouchaker is scheduled to receive sentencing in September.

Why this matters: This case highlights the devastating consequences of serious crime and the broader societal impact it can have, extending beyond the immediate victims to trigger widespread social unrest.

What this means for you: What this means for you: While this incident occurred in Ireland, it underscores the importance of community safety and vigilance, and the potential for tragic events to spark wider societal reactions.
