A tragic car crash in Wiltshire has left a community in shock, with one woman dead and another seriously injured. The collision on the B4696 near Royal Wootton Bassett on June 30 involved two vehicles: an orange Peugeot 107 travelling northbound and a black Vauxhall Astra heading southbound.
At approximately 18:05 BST, the incident occurred between Brinkworth Road and Lydiard Plain. The driver of the Peugeot was pronounced dead at the scene, with her next of kin informed and receiving support from specially trained officers. In contrast, the 43-year-old driver of the Vauxhall, who was treated in hospital after the crash, has since been taken into police custody for questioning.
The driver's arrest initially stemmed from suspicion of causing death by driving while unfit through drink or drugs, but charges have now escalated to murder and attempted murder. A teenage girl, who was a passenger in the Vauxhall, sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalised. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker acknowledged the potential for increased community concern, reassuring the public that there is no wider risk.
Wiltshire Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), citing prior involvement with the suspect. The force confirmed they received multiple calls from the public concerning the individual in the hours leading up to the collision. Authorities urge anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses relevant dash cam footage – particularly from nearby Cricklade High Street, Purton High Street, and surrounding areas – to come forward and assist with their ongoing investigation.
