A hail of gunfire shattered the tranquility of a Toxteth cafe on Friday afternoon, leaving one man fighting for life as he lay wounded amidst the chaos. Merseyside Police confirmed the shooting occurred on Lodge Lane at approximately 17:00 BST, sparking a swift and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Describing the incident as a "dangerous and reckless act of violence," Detective Chief Inspector Alan Nuttall highlighted the potential for far more tragic outcomes given the public setting. The officer stressed that numerous other individuals could have been harmed had the shooter's aim been slightly off, underscoring the severity of discharging a firearm in a crowded place.
As part of their efforts to prevent further crime and locate any potential suspects or evidence, Merseyside Police have implemented a stop and search order across a significant portion of south Liverpool. The order, which was initially valid until 18:59 on Friday but is subject to review, covers an extensive area including Upper Parliament Street, Smithtown Road, Greenbank Road, North Mossley Hill Road, Queens Drive, Aigburth Vale, Carnatic Road, Victoria Road, Ashfield Road, Aigburth Road, Park Road, Park Place, and St James Place.
Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any video footage – including dashcam or CCTV from the Lodge Lane area around the time of the shooting – to come forward. The public's assistance is crucial in helping detectives with their ongoing enquiries and bringing those responsible to justice.
