An inquest has heard that a man killed by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park had suffered bouts of psychosis, with his family raising concerns about his mental health care.

  • William Chapman, 24, died after climbing into a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on 10 October.
  • His family told an inquest opening that he had suffered bouts of psychosis and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
  • The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS foundation trust has launched an investigation into his contact with mental health services.

William Chapman, 24, who was killed by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, had experienced bouts of psychosis, his family informed an inquest opening. They also expressed concerns regarding his contact with mental health services prior to his death.

Mr Chapman was mauled to death by a Siberian tiger named Altai on Saturday, 10 October, after climbing into its enclosure. He had been diagnosed with schizophrenia but was described as “highly functioning and independent with no care requirements”.

The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS foundation trust has initiated an investigation following Mr Chapman's death, after his family raised “a number of concerns” about his care. An initial postmortem examination indicated he died from multiple traumatic injuries.

The City of Doncaster Council is also conducting a health and safety investigation into the incident at the park. A full inquest is scheduled to take place on 18 March next year.
