A camper in California found himself in an unenviable situation on Saturday after falling into a vault toilet at Camp Edison while attempting to retrieve his dropped sunglasses. The unidentified man spent between 10 and 15 minutes submerged in the tank's contents before emergency services could safely extract him.
The incident took place at approximately 2:30 pm Pacific Time at the popular Shaver Lake campsite, situated about 50 miles north-east of Fresno. According to a spokesperson for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, specialist rescue crews from Cal Fire were dispatched to the scene to assist with the complex extrication from the confined space beneath the waterless, non-flushing toilet.
Sgt Chris Tullus of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a caller at Camp Edison reported the person's fall. Initially, via a Spanish translator, they advised that the individual had fallen into a "chemical storage tank." Law enforcement, Camp Edison staff, and fire personnel responded swiftly to the report.
Upon successful removal, the man was assessed and found to be uninjured. However, Sgt Tullus noted that a thorough "hosing down" by the Cal Fire crew was necessary to decontaminate him before he was able to leave the scene. The bizarre mishap adds to a growing list of unusual incidents reported at campsites.
This event echoes similar incidents elsewhere, including a woman in Michigan in 2023 who also fell into an outhouse toilet while trying to retrieve a dropped Apple Watch. Additionally, a female tourist in Australia's Northern Territory became trapped in waist-deep excrement in April after a long-drop toilet she was using collapsed, highlighting the potential hazards associated with certain outdoor toilet facilities.
