Manchester City started their Women's Super League campaign with a 3-1 win against Birmingham City, while other title rivals experienced mixed results.

  • Manchester City secured a 3-1 victory over newly-promoted Birmingham City.
  • Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
  • Arsenal achieved a 1-0 win against Brighton, with Lisa Baum scoring on her debut.

Manchester City commenced their Women's Super League (WSL) title defence with a 3-1 home victory against newly-promoted Birmingham City at the Joie Stadium. Manager Andree Jeglertz expressed delight with the win, despite wanting more after a "hesitant" first half.

In contrast, Chelsea, who finished third last season, were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal, considered bookmakers' favourites, secured a 1-0 win away at Brighton, with 19-year-old Lisa Baum scoring on her debut.

Elsewhere, London City Lionesses, boosted by new signings including Alexia Putellas, defeated Manchester United 2-1. Tottenham started their campaign strongly with a 3-1 win over West Ham, featuring two goals from debutant Kirsty Hanson. Liverpool also made a strong start, achieving a 4-0 victory against newly-promoted Charlton.

Crystal Palace, another promoted side, secured a 1-0 upset victory against Everton, with Lexi Lloyd-Smith scoring the winning goal.
