Manchester City continued their winning streak in the new Women’s Super League season, overcoming a spirited Liverpool side with a 4-2 victory. The defending champions needed a 90th-minute own goal from Grace Fisk to take a 3-2 lead, before Lauren Hemp added her second goal in stoppage time to seal the win.
Hemp's first goal, a low finish from Carlotta Wamser's pass, marked her first WSL goal since November and her first club goal since February. Liverpool, managed by Gareth Taylor, had taken a 2-1 lead before half-time, with goals from Alice Bergström and Vivien Endemann, but Khadija Shaw equalised for City just before the break.
The result ensures Manchester City, the only WSL side with a 100% winning record after the opening two rounds, will remain at the top of the table for at least another week. They have not dropped any points in home league fixtures since Andrée Jeglertz became manager in summer 2025.
During the match, the crowd observed a minute's applause in the 13th minute for the late former Liverpool manager Matt Beard, marking a year since his death on 20 September 2025. Beard led Liverpool to two consecutive WSL titles starting in 2013.
