Man's prison drug smuggling plot sentence increased by Court of Appeal

Dimitrije Dragovic has had his prison sentence increased by one year and two months after the Attorney General referred his case to the Court of Appeal.

  • Dimitrije Dragovic's sentence was increased to three years and four months.
  • He pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle drugs and banned items into HMP Highpoint.
  • Police tracked Dragovic through a surveillance operation in November 2025.

Dimitrije Dragovic, of Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, has had his prison sentence for conspiring to smuggle drugs and banned items increased by one year and two months. The Attorney General, Ellie Reeves KC MP, referred his case to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

On 19 August 2026, the Court of Appeal increased Dragovic's sentence to three years and four months. He had previously been sentenced to two years and two months' imprisonment on 20 February 2026 at Ipswich Crown Court, after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to convey a list A article into or out of prison, one count of conspiracy to convey a list B item into or out of prison, and breaching a suspended sentence order.

The court heard that police tracked Dragovic in November 2025. He was observed meeting co-conspirators in London, checking into a Suffolk hotel under a false name, and collecting a bag. He was later caught by police dogs after discarding the bag and fleeing across a river. The bag contained a drone, cannabis, tobacco, mobile phones, SIM cards, dongles, and charging equipment, with HMP Highpoint within the drone's flight range.

Attorney General Ellie Reeves KC MP welcomed the decision, stating that smuggling such items into prison allows organised criminals to coordinate activities from behind bars, undermining security.

Why this matters: The Attorney General stated that smuggling drones, phones, and drugs into prisons allows organised criminals to coordinate activities from behind bars, which undermines public safety.
