Consumers searching for home insurance may not find the most suitable policies on price comparison websites, according to a recent analysis. Almost half of the top-rated home insurance policies assessed were only available directly from insurers.
Of 72 home insurance policies from 30 brands, six of the 13 rated as 'Best Buys' could not be purchased through comparison sites. Additionally, nearly all policies recommended for contents cover were exclusively available directly from the insurer.
Insurers such as NFU Mutual, Ecclesiastical, and Sagic do not sell any of their assessed policies via comparison websites. Other insurers, like Aviva, may offer different policies on comparison sites compared to their own websites; for example, the 'Best Buy' Aviva Signature policy must be bought directly.
The analysis suggests that while comparison sites are a useful starting point, checking insurers' websites or contacting them directly could reveal additional policy options. However, buying directly does not guarantee a cheaper quote, as premiums depend on various factors including property, location, and claims history.
