Aston Villa secured a 1-0 victory over Newcastle, with Johan Manzambi scoring the decisive goal. The Switzerland midfielder, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Wednesday, headed in the winner from a Joao Gomes cross.
Manzambi had previously opted to join Villa in a club-record deal worth over £50m, turning down a move to St James' Park. He played a crucial role in Freiburg reaching the Europa League final last season, where they were beaten by Villa.
This win extends Aston Villa's unbeaten run across all competitions to five matches. The team, managed by Unai Emery, has also moved up to 12th in the Premier League and holds six points from two Champions League ties.
Manzambi has made a significant impact since his first start for Villa on 19 September, being involved in five goals (three goals, two assists) across all competitions. Only Erling Haaland of Manchester City has been involved in more goals among Premier League players during this period.
Villa will next entertain Norwegian side Viking in the Champions League on Wednesday, before hosting Manchester City, who have won all seven of their Premier League matches this season.
