The Secretary of State for Justice has announced the reappointment of Martin Jones as His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation. His second term will run for three years, from 1 March 2027 to 30 April 2030.
HM Inspectorate of Probation is an independent body responsible for inspecting probation and youth justice services across England and Wales. Its role includes reporting on the effectiveness of work with adults and children who have offended, through inspections, recommendations, research, and guidance.
Mr Jones has served as His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation since March 2024. During his tenure, he has overseen inspections focused on public protection, victim safety, and service improvement, and led the publication of the Inspectorate’s Annual Report on Probation Services. He also became Chair of the Criminal Justice Joint Inspectorates Chief Inspector Group in 2025. Prior to this role, Mr Jones was Chief Executive of the Parole Board for nine years.
