Martinez criticises Manchester United hierarchy after Champions League defeat

Lisandro Martinez has openly criticised Manchester United's ownership and technical director Jason Wilcox following their Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, expressing disappointment with the club's current state.

  • Lisandro Martinez publicly criticised Manchester United's hierarchy and technical director Jason Wilcox after a Champions League defeat.
  • Manchester United have secured only two wins in their opening nine games this season.
  • The club spent approximately £150m on three midfielders this summer, less than top-six rivals and some newly-promoted clubs.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has launched a surprising attack on the club's ownership and technical director Jason Wilcox following Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. The loss leaves United with just two wins from their first nine games of the season, against newly promoted Ipswich and Champions League debutants Sabah.

Speaking to Prime Video in Madrid, Martinez stated, "Sometimes it's a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment, you know? We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top. I expect more, 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]."

The Argentine's comments highlight a growing disillusionment among players regarding the actions of those at the top of the club. This summer, United spent around £150m on midfielders Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba. This figure is less than all their top six rivals, as well as newly-promoted Hull and Ipswich.

The club also reportedly failed to invest in a forward despite concerns about Joshua Zirkzee's suitability and did not secure Lewis Hall, leaving them with only one recognised left-back. Reports suggest the hierarchy is planning a defensive rebuild for next summer.

Why this matters: Martinez's public criticism signals significant discontent among Manchester United players regarding the club's leadership and transfer strategy, potentially impacting team morale and future performance.
