The Home Office has released new guidance to clarify the notification requirements for Martyn's Law, which is anticipated to come into effect next year. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is continuing preparations, including developing a notification portal.
Once Martyn's Law is in force, individuals or organisations responsible for qualifying premises and events will be required to formally notify the SIA. For premises, a three-month notification window will open from the commencement of the relevant section of the Act, with changes to be reported within 28 days thereafter. For events, notification will generally be required within 14 days of the event date being publicly announced.
The national threat level for terrorism in the UK remains SEVERE. Martyn's Law aims to enhance safety at premises and events, not to prevent them from happening. The SIA is encouraging those in scope to begin preparations and utilise available resources, such as the Home Office guidance and information on ProtectUK, to understand their obligations.
