A former writer for the US legal drama Matlock, John Lowe, has initiated legal proceedings against CBS Television Studios, alongside the show's showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and executive producers Nicki Renna and Jeffrey Lieber. The lawsuit, filed in California, alleges that Lowe experienced a hostile work environment characterised by racist and sexist remarks during his tenure from October 2023 to July 2025.
Lowe claims that he and other Black cast and crew members were subjected to racially stereotyped comments, sexualised remarks, and intrusive questioning. A central allegation in the lawsuit is that Lowe's employment was terminated as a retaliatory measure, occurring just two weeks after he reported an incident where Snyder Urman allegedly used a derogatory term in reference to Juneteenth, a significant cultural holiday in the United States.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for CBS Studios stated their commitment to maintaining a respectful workplace and taking all complaints seriously. They added that a comprehensive investigation into the matter was conducted, which reportedly found no corroborating evidence for Lowe's claims. CBS Studios has indicated its intention to 'vigorously defend' against the lawsuit.
The legal filing details several alleged instances of misconduct. Lowe claims that managers and producers repeatedly made sexual comments concerning his body and genitalia, alongside racially charged remarks that reportedly caused discomfort among onlookers. Specific allegations include Snyder Urman and Lieber purportedly humiliating Lowe in front of colleagues by commenting on his clothing and making an inappropriate remark about his genitalia size. Furthermore, Lowe alleges that Nicki Renna called him late at night, stating she was 'in bed wearing only her underwear'.
Lowe's attorney, Ron Zambrano, has condemned the alleged behaviour, stating there is 'no excuse for this blatant racism and harassment' and that CBS 'should be ashamed for allowing it'. He emphasised that Lowe 'deserved to be treated with dignity and respect', rather than being subjected to 'outrageous and illegal racial slurs and sexual harassment'. The Matlock series, starring Kathy Bates, is anticipated to return for its third season on CBS early next year. While Matlock is a US production, its availability in the UK would typically be via major streaming services or broadcast channels like Sky or ITV, though specific UK streaming details for its upcoming season are not yet confirmed.
This lawsuit emerges three months after actor David Del Rio, also formerly associated with Matlock, filed an arbitration claim against CBS Studios following his dismissal. Del Rio, a former series regular, was reportedly removed from the show after a co-star accused him of sexual assault. These incidents highlight growing scrutiny within the entertainment industry regarding workplace conduct and accountability.
