Matt Richardson, the Kent-born track cyclist who previously represented Australia, has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The English team announced on Wednesday night (AEST) that Richardson would not compete due to an injury sustained during international racing in Japan.

Richardson had sensationally moved from Australia to Great Britain shortly after securing three medals at the Paris Olympics. His participation in the Commonwealth Games was set to feature a highly anticipated contest against his former Australian teammate, Leigh Hoffman.

Team management confirmed Richardson's withdrawal via an Instagram post, stating, "Unfortunately, due to an injury sustained in international racing earlier this week, Matt Richardson will no longer be able to compete for Team England at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games."

The four-day track cycling programme is scheduled to begin on Thursday night (AEST) at Glasgow's Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
