British cyclist Matthew Brennan, 21, delivered a dominant performance at the Vuelta a España, securing five stage victories on his Grand Tour debut. This achievement makes him the youngest rider to win five stages in a Grand Tour and the youngest to claim back-to-back Vuelta stages. He is also only the second British rider, after Mark Cavendish, to win four or more stages in a single three-week race.
Brennan's wins came across varied terrain, from flat stages to uphill drags, and included beating Tadej Pogacar. He entered the race as a favourite for flatter stages, with a strong team supporting him, and reportedly handled the pressure well.
Fellow British rider Oscar Onley, 23, finished sixth in his debut Vuelta a España, despite experiencing sickness and a crash earlier in the race. The Scot also won the best young rider classification. Other British riders, including Thomas Gloag and Callum Thornley, also achieved notable results.
Brennan's success is seen as a significant moment for British cycling, particularly as the Tour de France is set to return to the UK in 2027. His team, Visma-Lease a Bike, will prioritise Jonas Vingegaard's bid for a third Tour title, but Brennan has potentially auditioned for a place in the squad for the 2027 Tour de France.
