Olympic champion Rhys McClenaghan finished seventh in the pommel horse final at the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb. The 27-year-old Irish gymnast, who had shoulder surgery, scored 14.000, an improvement on his Commonwealth Games performance where he tested a new routine.

This score was below his winning mark of 15.533 from the Paris Olympics two years ago. Italy's Gabriele Targhetta claimed gold with 15.133, ahead of Armenian gymnasts Manukyan Hamlet and Khachatryan Mamikon.

In another final, Ireland's Eamon Montgomery also placed seventh in the floor final. The Belfast gymnast, competing in his first European final, scored 13.5330 after a 0.3-point penalty for stepping out of bounds.
