Brendon McCullum, England's white-ball head coach, has affirmed his readiness to forge a collaborative partnership with the country's next Test head coach. His comments come after a period of significant success for England's limited-overs teams, following his earlier departure from the red-ball coaching position this month.
McCullum masterminded England's first One Day International (ODI) series victory over India since 2018, culminating in a dramatic 27-run win at Lord's on Sunday. This triumph saw England post a record List A total at the venue, with Ben Duckett scoring 141 supported by half-centuries from Jacob Bethell and Joe Root. The victory was bolstered by a mid-innings strategy shift, inspired by McCullum, to introduce part-time spinner Jacob Bethell, which led to the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma.
The white-ball coach also oversaw a dominant 4-0 Twenty20 (T20) series win against India earlier in July. This resurgence in the white-ball format provides a positive backdrop as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) conducts interviews for the vacant Test coaching role this week. McCullum, 44, emphasised that a shared commitment to English cricket's welfare would be the foundation of any successful working relationship.
Addressing questions about potentially being the 'junior' coach given the Test team's current challenges compared to the improved white-ball setup, McCullum stressed the importance of mutual 'give and take'. He stated, "Ultimately as long as everyone wants what is right for English cricket, there will be some give and take on certain things. That is the way it is." He added that he looks forward to these conversations once a new coach is appointed.
McCullum clarified that he would not be involved in the selection process for his red-ball replacement, stating he has "enough on [his] plate trying to work out the white-ball stuff." The Test team has recently faced setbacks, losing consecutive series at home to New Zealand and away to Australia, ahead of Pakistan's three-Test tour next month. Former Australian chief Justin Langer and ex-England batter Jonathan Trott are among the reported front-runners for the Test role, after Andy Flower ruled himself out.
Looking ahead, McCullum confirmed he would remain in England to watch The Hundred tournament, which is due to start on Tuesday. He expressed enthusiasm for observing both established white-ball players and emerging talent during the 100-ball competition, viewing it as a valuable opportunity to assess future prospects for England's limited-overs squads ahead of next year's ODI World Cup in South Africa.
