England head coach Brendon McCullum has conveyed profound 'worry and concern' for Ben Stokes, following an incident at a London nightclub which has led to the all-rounder's unavailability for the second Test against New Zealand. McCullum, speaking at a sombre press conference at The Oval, repeatedly emphasised his focus on supporting Stokes rather than addressing his future as England Test captain.
Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson have been stood down from the upcoming Test, pending an investigation into an incident that occurred last week. The pair reportedly breached the England team's midnight curfew while celebrating the first Test victory at Lord's, and were present when a member of England security staff was allegedly struck by a Saracens rugby player.
This latest controversy adds another chapter to Stokes' high-profile career, which previously saw him cleared of affray charges in 2017 after an incident outside a Bristol nightclub. In 2021, he also took a break from cricket to prioritise his mental well-being. McCullum reiterated his commitment to Stokes, stating, "Our concern is with Ben, our concern is handling that situation, making sure we look after him, that he feels supported by us and in communication with us."
When pressed on the captaincy, McCullum consistently sidestepped questions regarding Stokes' long-term role, choosing instead to focus on the immediate need to support the player. "What will be will be down the line. Those decisions are not for now. The concern is making sure Ben is fine," he commented. Director of Cricket Rob Key last week indicated he saw no reason why Stokes wouldn't play for England again, but also refrained from endorsing his captaincy.
For the second Test at The Oval, England have announced four changes to their XI. Joe Root will step in as captain in Stokes' absence, with Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher, and uncapped players Sonny Baker and Jordan Cox joining the squad. Despite the ongoing investigation, Stokes has reportedly returned to training and there is a possibility he could feature for Durham in their County Championship match against Northamptonshire on Friday.
McCullum, who has been in daily communication with Stokes, acknowledged the immense pressure that comes with the captaincy, stating that Stokes has put "his heart and soul" into the job but that "the scrutiny that comes with it has its perks but also its challenges." He concluded by reiterating the leadership's desire to "just want to focus on Ben" during this challenging period.
