Conor McGregor's return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) octagon ended abruptly and disappointingly, as the star suffered a knee injury just 69 seconds into his bout against Max Holloway at UFC 329. The highly anticipated fight, McGregor's first since 2021, saw him visibly hobble out of the T-Mobile Arena following the early stoppage. Despite refusing crutches immediately after the fight, he was later seen limping to his car, raising concerns about the severity of the injury.
This latest defeat marks McGregor's third in a row and leaves him with only one win in the last decade, stretching back to 2016. The injury appeared to occur in the opening seconds of the fight when his knee buckled after an attempted kick failed to connect. The immediate aftermath saw widespread speculation, with former British UFC champion Michael Bisping, now a pundit for Paramount+, commenting on the potential career-ending implications. "If it's a real surgery, if he's blown his ACL and will have to take a year or 18 months out, that's it. The career is over," Bisping stated.
McGregor, widely regarded as the biggest star in mixed martial arts history and instrumental in boosting the sport's global appeal, has also been embroiled in numerous controversies outside the octagon. These include a civil jury appeal loss in July 2025 against a High Court finding in Dublin that he had sexually assaulted a woman in December 2018. He was ordered to pay £206,000 plus damages to Nikita Hand, who accused him of rape. Despite the ruling, McGregor continues to maintain his innocence, stating this week, "I'm an innocent man and I'll stand for my innocence until the day I go out."
The quick end to McGregor's fight prompted a reaction from Liverpool's Paddy Pimblett, who secured a swift victory in the co-main event. Upon seeing McGregor's fight waved off backstage, Pimblett declared, "Oh my god, McGregor's done already? He's finished, the new boy is in town. I can become the face of the organisation now." He added, "You could call that the changing of the guard, I can be the new face of MMA now. I just got a finish in 52 seconds on the biggest card of the year."
Despite some speculation that McGregor might have carried an injury into the fight, he took to X to refute these claims. "I had no injury/injuries going into the fight," McGregor posted, adding, "I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere." The bout with Holloway was a rematch, 13 years after McGregor first defeated him by decision, though this time they competed as welterweights.
