Rory McIlroy is making a beeline for the driving range after a second round at the BMW Championship in St Louis that saw him lose ground. The Masters champion, who shared the lead after a superb six-under-par opening round, could only manage a 69 on Friday, improving his total by a single shot.
McIlroy noted that conditions were "pretty similar to yesterday," despite a different wind direction, and still "very scorable." He admitted, "I didn’t quite hit it as good as I did yesterday, so probably an afternoon on the range for me."
American JJ Spaun, meanwhile, surged to 11 under at the turn before three bogeys checked his progress. However, two late birdies, including one on the final hole, left him as the clubhouse leader among the early starters at 10 under. World number one Scottie Scheffler, who was two over after his first round, recovered from an early bogey with five birdies after the turn to remain in contention at three under.
