Rory McIlroy fired on all cylinders as he shared the lead at the Scottish Open after a barnstorming opening round of 65 at the Renaissance Club. The Northern Irish superstar, fresh from his 2023 championship win in this very event, joined an elite group at the top of the leaderboard alongside American Patrick Cantlay, South Korean Tom Kim, and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger.
McIlroy's day got off to a steady start on the 10th hole, but it was his explosive drive on the first that set the tone for what was to come. A 352-yard missile left him with an eagle opportunity – and he seized it, sinking his four-iron approach to within 19 feet of the pin. It was the perfect storm of power and precision.
Not everything went smoothly, mind. Two bogeys on the front nine had McIlroy hovering around par. But then something clicked. He regained momentum with a clutch two-putt from 61 feet on the seventh hole, which set him up for a crucial birdie – and later, on the eighth, he rolled in a 16-foot putt to surge into contention.
McIlroy's key to success? "I drove it particularly well today," he exclaimed. "It's something I've been working on since Shinnecock, and it paid off today. When you're hitting it long and straight, you can attack the course and create scoring chances." He certainly did – especially on the par-fives, where his big-game golf really shone.
Brooks Koepka is hot on their heels, just one shot back, while Scottish hero Bob MacIntyre delighted the home crowd with a 67. US Open champion Wyndham Clark also finished on 67 – an impressive recovery after stumbling to three over par early on.
The real battle begins tomorrow as players look to consolidate their positions ahead of The Open Championship next week. But for McIlroy, this moment is all about momentum – and he's certainly got it.
