Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has been isolated from the national squad as a precautionary measure, casting a shadow over his participation in their opening FIFA World Cup fixture against Haiti. The Napoli player is currently dealing with an upset stomach and did not join his teammates on the bus to Boston, where the match is set to take place.
McTominay, a crucial figure in Steve Clarke's plans, missed Thursday's training session at Scotland's Charlotte base. His separate travel arrangements, accompanied by a team doctor, underscore the management's concern about a potential spread of the illness within the camp. The 29-year-old's availability is paramount as Scotland embarks on their first World Cup campaign in 28 years, facing a challenging Group B that also includes footballing giants Brazil and Morocco.
Fellow midfielder Kenny McLean expressed hope for McTominay's swift recovery, highlighting his importance to the team. "Hopefully that doesn't spread," McLean commented on the illness. "Fingers crossed Scott will be fine. I'm sure he will be." He added, "I don't need to speak too much on him, everyone knows how big he is. It's a team effort and always will be, but when you have special, special players like that you want them to be available."
The highly anticipated clash against Haiti will kick off in the early hours of Sunday morning, Scottish time, at Boston Stadium in Foxborough. A significant contingent of Scottish supporters has made the journey to the United States to cheer on their national side. The team will be looking to start strong in a group where every point will be vital for progression.
Adding to the squad's dynamics, injured midfielder Billy Gilmour has also travelled to Boston to support his teammates. Gilmour's World Cup aspirations were unfortunately cut short by an injury sustained during a warm-up fixture against Curacao. McLean spoke warmly of Gilmour's presence, stating, "He obviously wants to experience things around the lads and also in and around the city with the fans and soak in the atmosphere. He deserves so much more but there is going to be so much more opportunity for Billy."
